The specialty of thoracic surgery is dedicated to treating diseases of the lung, esophagus, mediastinum, chest wall, diaphragm, pleural space and trachea; with a special emphasis in Thoracic Oncology (treatment of malignant diseases in these areas). This includes complex operations such as resection of superior sulcus or apical tumors of the lung, carinal/tracheal resections with complex airway reconstructions, resection of the esophagus through multiple approaches with complex gastric, colonic or jejunal reconstruction, and palliative airway and esophageal procedures. Many of these procedures are now being performed by minimally invasive approaches such as Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) or laparoscopy.
In conjunction with specialist in Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Pulmonary Medicine, Gastroenterology, Anesthesiology and Radiology at the Cancer Center, thoracic oncology patients are evaluated by a multidisciplinary team approach and receive the most up to date multimodality treatments in combination with surgery.
In addition to surgery for thoracic malignancies, thoracic surgeons also manage and perform procedures for benign thoracic disorders such as esophageal myotomy for esophageal motility disorders of achalasia or esophageal spasm, complex anti-reflux repair for gastroesophageal reflux, thymectomy for myasthenia gravis and sympathectomy for palmar hyperhidrosis.
